First Step : Check the settings for the modem.
More information : Settings such as data rate, parity, protocols etc. can produce confusing results if not entered correctly. Ensure that these settings on your software match those of the system you are trying to 'dial in' to. It may also be worth checking your modem documentation to ensure that your modem is capable of these settings.
